Challenge Series Changes

June 8th, 2012 | Uncategorized | Comments Off on Challenge Series Changes

Races scheduled for Saturdays and Sunday at O’leary will now be held on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 because Summerside is racing on Sundays. Check the Race Date page for the full schedule.
Please note that a travel allowance will be available for horsemen who travel over 50 km. one-way to race.
Horses who in the opinion of the program manager are non competitive will not receive travel allowance. If they show that they are competitive in the next Challenge Series program, they will be reinstated.
In an effort to encourage young people to participate in harness racing, owners who use a driver under 21 years of age will gain extra points towards the finals on their horse.

2012 Director’s Meeting

April 5th, 2012 | Uncategorized | Comments Off on 2012 Director’s Meeting

The Matinee Track directors held their annual meeting on Tuesday, April 3 in Kensington. Present were Kent Oakes from the Department of Agriculture, Wayne Pike, manager of PEIHRIA, Frank Hansen representing Tyne Valley, Clair Sweet of O’Leary, Fred Paynter for Kensington and Raymond White and Lowell Large of Pinette.
Kent Oakes said that he was not anticipating changes to the government’s support of the tracks but we would have to wait for the provincial budget to pass for confirmation.
Wayne Pike spoke of the strength grass roots racing at the matinee level lends to the racing industry as a whole. He said that new figures released show that PEI leads all of Canada in new memberships to Standardbred Canada on a percentage basis and we have the biggest proportion of members under 18 years of age. He asked all Island horsemen at all levels to stand together and present a united front in order to prevent the lack of government support seen in other provinces.
The directors discussed the 2011 matinee racing season and were unanimous in these points:
* Dangerous or reckless driving will result in both a loss of points and loss of travel allowance for that race.
* The no whipping rule will stand.
* Travel allowance (if available) will remain the same – $25 per starter and $50 for each horse that travels over 50 km. one way.
* Kensington entries must be made no later than the Thursday before the race.

Matinee Championship Final 2011

September 26th, 2011 | Uncategorized | Comments Off on Matinee Championship Final 2011

Jimmy MacMillan gave another drivers clinic on how to rate a mile at the Matinee Championship finals at Summerside on Sunday afternoon, winning three of the four races. In the Department of Agriculture trophy race, he circled the field past the half with Jennifer and Robert Parsons’ Miller Miller, hanging on for the win despite a late charge by Ryan DesRoche with the Parsons’ Sammys Luck. MacMillan won the first race with Ivan MacMillan’s Camillion and the third with another Parsons horse, Aria Aria. Brandon Darrach was the spoiler in the second race, a hard-fought battle in the stretch bringing Rags To Britches home first for Rick and Nancy Dunville.

Congratulations to all the participants for a great summer with a very professional looking championship final.
