Awards Banquet

Third time is a charm and the 3rd annual PEIHRIA and Matinee Tracks Awards Banquet finally took place at the CDPEC on Thursday, February 18th. The well attended event included special guests Minister of Agriculture and Deputy Premier The Honourable George Webster and Minister of Finance The Honourable Wes Sheridan. Minister Sheridan told the appreciative crowd that, in spite of cross-the-board government cutbacks, the amount allocated to harness racing would not change in 2010.

The prestigious Standardbred Canada Owner Of The Year Award was presented to Leo Bernard, owner of the top matinee points horse, Little York Ed.

Brandon Darrach accepted the Matinee Champions A Division award for Butterscotch Belle, winner of the 2009 Department of Agriculture Matinee Championship.

Heather and Melvin Gamester won the trophy for the B Division Matinee Champion Hawaiian Ice Man.

The C Division champion is Sherwood Dexter and the trophy is accepted by proud owner Byron Gamester.

Sportsman of The Year Award went to Phillip DesRoches, a mainstay of the O’Leary racetrack, manning the gate, doing 50/50 sales, classifying and any other jobs that need a volunteer, not to mention training and driving. The Sportsman of the Year award honours the many volunteers whose generous donation of time keep our matinee tracks alive.

Albon Doucette celebrated his birthday Thursday by winning the Amateur Driver Of The Year award as top points earner at the Challenge Series races.

Brett Ross is the proud recipient of the Matinee Tracks Future Stars Award. Brett is a welcome addition to the roster at Pinette Raceway.
Future Stars awards winners Stephen Kilbride, Jeff Wallace and Dana Sweet were not present.

Points were tied for 2009 Rookie Of The Year Award, and the two deserving recipients are Kerry Shea (l) and Ryan DesRoches. Both of these young fellows started their driving career in 2009 and gave very credible, responsible performances, a good indication of things to come.

Also absent was 2009 Driver Of The Year, Under 21 Division, Devon Wallace.
